Renting with a pet in The Bronx

Renting with a pet in The Bronx usually means an apartment: large prewar and postwar buildings, newer developments and big co-op communities, plus houses and two-family homes in some neighborhoods. Pet rules vary from building to building, and co-ops and condos usually layer their own house rules and board approval on top of a lease, so ask for the written pet policy before you apply.

The Bronx has some of the city's largest parks, which can matter a lot to dog owners. Ask how close the nearest park entrance or dog run is, whether the building has an elevator, and what rules apply to dogs in lobbies and courtyards. If a building has a weight or breed limit, get the exact rule in writing rather than relying on a verbal answer.

New York City's pet law (NYC Administrative Code § 27-2009.1) can waive a no-pet clause in buildings with three or more units when a pet is kept openly for three months with the landlord's knowledge and no legal action is started. It doesn't cover NYCHA housing or pets that cause damage or a nuisance; the NYC Office of Animal Welfare explains it. The ASPCA has a community veterinary clinic in the South Bronx for lower-income residents, and Animal Care Centers of NYC has held free vaccine clinics in The Bronx.

License your dog with the NYC Health Department and keep rabies records current, since licensed, vaccinated dogs can use park dog runs off-leash. A pet résumé with a past landlord reference can help with buildings that review pets individually. Make a free pet résumé.
