Renting with a pet in San Diego

San Diego's mild weather makes it easy to be outside with a pet most of the year. The city has popular dog beaches, including Ocean Beach Dog Beach, and designated off-leash areas in parks. Rules and hours change, so check the City of San Diego's website for current dog-beach and leash rules.

In drier months, watch for foxtails, the barbed grass seeds that can work into a dog's paws, ears and nose. Coyotes are also common near canyons and open space, so supervise small pets outdoors and keep them in at night. When you tour a rental, look at the yard's landscaping and fencing, and check gates and gaps under fences.

Much of San Diego's rental housing is apartments and condos, often with association or building rules about pets. Ask about breed, weight and number-of-pets limits, and whether there's a relief area or dog run on site. California has its own rules on security deposits that can affect pet deposits, so ask the landlord to put every pet charge in writing, including the deposit, any fee and monthly pet rent, before you sign.

If you're moving to San Diego, find a local vet soon after you arrive and keep your pet's vaccination and license records handy. A pet résumé with spay/neuter status, training notes and a past landlord reference can help your application stand out for apartments and condos that receive many applicants. Make a free pet résumé.
